Ron Bastick
Ron Bastick took up painting seriously just prior to retiring from his occupation as a Consulting Structural and Civil Engineer. He has always had an interest in art and having met Arthur Phillips some twenty years ago, known at that time as one of the leading watercolourists in Australia; decided to take up lessons with Arthur, over a period of five years, to learn as much as possible about this medium. On retiring from his Engineering Consulting practice, Ron and his wife Barbara moved to Hindmarsh Island. Ron eventually met the late Terry Lewistka and undertook tuition in using oil paints.
Ron prefers to paint or draw, sitting or standing at an outdoor location with, or without, an easel, fighting off marauding ants, flies and even the inquisitive onlooker. The preferred subject matters include, landscapes, boats moored in their harbour, or at anchor and interesting old structures. The medium used for any chosen subject can vary from oils to watercolour work, sometimes combined with pen and ink drawing. Very often, work produced outside is used as the basis for a larger work to be painted in his Goolwa studio. When working outdoors, if possible, he sets up in the shade or if none is available, works underneath a large umbrella which has, on a few occasions become airborne due to a sudden gust of wind. Thereby causing a hurried scamper to retrieve same.
Ron is a Lifetime Member of the Victor Harbor Arts Society and recently been accepted as a member of the Victor Harbor Regional Gallery. He looks forward to the future interaction with the members of both organisations and hopefully, many more years trying to produce the “elusive masterpiece”. He well remembers one of Arthur Phillips quotes “make the ordinary seem extraordinary!“
