Jessica James
Jessica James is a coloured pencil artist.
I create highly detailed portraits of animals that celebrate their individuality,
emotional presence, expressions and quiet intelligence. My work is grounded
in close observation and slow, layered mark-making, allowing each piece to
develop depth, texture, detail and quiet intimacy.
Animals have always been central to my life, and that connection guides my
drawing to the expressions, personalities, and stories held in their
eyes, and I aim to capture more than a likeness. I want viewers to feel the
character and spirit of the animal in front of them.
I have always loved coloured pencils. Working with them gives me the
precision and softness needed to build lifelike fur, feathers and fine detail.
Each portrait becomes a moment of stillness, inviting people to pause and
recognise the beauty, dignity and depth of the creatures we share lives with.
My drawings continue to evolve as I explore new ways to blend realism with warmth, storytelling, and a deep respect for the animals that inspire me.
